Box Office Information 31st Aug-2nd Sept 2007

Matt Damon refuses to budge from the top spot as the unstoppable Jason Bourne in The Bourne Ultimatum (Universal) which has taken £17.7m after only 3 weeks in the chart. Meanwhile, Judd Apatow's comical look at the results of a drunken one-night stand have helped keep Knocked Up (Universal) in 2nd place with £4.7m.

Most people have been and gone on their summer holiday for the year but I bet nobody had an experience in a hotel room quite like John Cusack in 1408 (Paramount), which entered the chart in 3rd place with £1.1m on its opening weekend. Based on the short story by Stephen King, John Cusack plays Mike Enslin - a horror writer who only believes what he sees in the process of debunking paranormal phenomena. After receiving an unsigned postcard warning him not to stay in room 1408 at New York's Dolphin Hotel, he ignores the cardinal rules of all horror movies by going to stay there despite repeated warnings from the hotel's manager (played by Samuel L Jackson) and what ensues is a nightmare to remember. Next time, he really should tip the bellboy for carrying his luggage!

Another major sporting event is about to start in the shape of the Rugby World Cup and with it comes the first of a number of films designed to keep girlfriends and wives alike happy! Taking £512k on its opening weekend (including previews), No Reservations (Warner Bros.) sees Mrs Douglas (that's Catherine Zeta-Jones) play Kate Armstrong - a chef at a top restaurant in Manhattan who has to become guardian of her 9 year old niece (played by Little Miss Sunshine herself - Abigail Breslin), whilst having to contend with new chef on the block, Nick (Aaron Eckhart), who she finds herself drawn to over time.

Taking a break from directing the Saw films, director James Wan has teamed up with Kevin Bacon for Death Sentence (Entertainment) which opened in 10th place over the weekend with £261k. Bacon stars as Nick Hume, VP of a company with the perfect life, family and house until his son - a promising hockey player - is killed by a gang. Understandably upset, Hume decides to take justice into his own hands by hunting down and killing the gang's leader, only to discover that they then want revenge on him. What ensues is a blood bath of mammoth proportions.

The next new entry into the chart sees Ryan Philippe take on an FBI agent in Breach (20th Century Fox) which opened in 12th place with £156k. Based on a true story, Philippe plays Eric O'Neill, a newly qualified FBI agent handpicked to work under the renowned operative Robert Hanssen (Chris Cooper), when in reality he has been placed there to expose Hanssen as a potential mole for the Soviet Union. Expect lots of shadows and trench coat wearing!

The last new entry into the chart ensures Jamie Bell is firmly out of his tutu and ballet shoes for Hallam Foe (Disney) which opened in 14th place with £133k. Bell stars as Foe, a teenage voyeur who fancies his step-mother until he is convinced she murdered his real mother and flees to Edinburgh where he ends up stalking a girl he thinks looks like his mother. Freud would have field day with this one!

Interesting film fact of the day: No Reservations is a remake of the German film Mostly Martha in 2001
