UK Box Office Information 21st-23rd September 2007
Whilst David 'Ross' Schwimmer has successfully managed to keep his directorial debut Run, Fat Boy, Run (Entertainment) at the top of the box office charts for a third week running (having taken £6.3m to date), the new face of Chanel - Ms Keira Knightley - has given Atonement (Universal) 2nd place in the chart with a total box office to date of £6.7m.
We have seen a plethora of wedding-themed films this year so far but I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (Universal) is by far the most unique!! Opening in 3rd place and taking £1.1m, the loveable Adam Sandler and the cuddle-able Kevin James star as straight New York firefighters (Chuck and Larry respectively) who pretend to be gay in order for Larry to receive domestic partner benefits for his kids. New York's finest don't get any finer than this although if you can't stand the sight of Jessica Biel walking around in her underwear, I suggest you steer clear of this one!
Teen team Jonah Hill and Michael Cera are in 4th place with Superbad (Sony), which has taken £3.4m to date, whilst Matt Damon is still running around most of the major cities around the world in The Bourne Ultimatum (Universal) which has taken a mighty £22.4m since opening.
Quentin Tarantarantarino is back with his half of what was formally to be released as Grindhouse - a double feature with films from Tarantino and his best bud Robert Rodriguez. Having been separated after a poor box office performance in the US, Tarantino's Death Proof (Momentum) has opened in 6th place this weekend taking £408k including previews, and follows Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) - a man who stalks and uses his car to murder beautiful women but comes across a trio of women who he finds aren't as easy as the prey he is used to (Rosario Dawson, Zoe Bell and Tracie Thoms). Not your average road trip movie!
The last new entry into the charts is A Mighty Heart (Paramount) which opened in 11th place with £153k. Starring one half of Brangelina - that's the Angelina half - A Mighty Heart is based on Mariane Pearl's (Angeline Jolie) account of the time in 2002 when her husband, a Wall Street Journal reporter investigating the shoe bomber Richard Reid, was kidnapped and murdered in Karachi. Six months pregnant at the time her husband went missing, Mariane wrote the book A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life And Death of My Husband Danny Pearl for their unborn child.
Interesting film fact of the day: Tarantino uses many hidden references to his other films throughout Death Proof including:
- James Parks plays Dept. Edgar McGraw - a character previously seen in Kill Bill: Vol 1
- At one point in the film, two of the characters say 'That's a little more information than we needed to know" - a sentence said by Uma Thurman to John Travolta in Pulp Fiction
- Kurt Russell mentions 'Big Kahuna Burger' - a brand used in Pulp Fiction
- In one scene the girls are having breakfast - an exact recreation of the scene in Reservoir Dogs
