Cate Blanchett Returns

It has been 9 years since Cate Blanchett donned the white face make-up and intricate gowns for Elizabeth but she was all too keen to reprise her role as England's most famous monarch in Elizabeth: The Golden Age (Universal) which opened in 4th place this weekend with £1.3m. Picking up where Elizabeth left off, Queen Liz finds herself fighting off a challenge to her throne from the Spanish King Philip II, as well as romantic advances from the dashing Sir Walter Raleigh (played by the dashing Clive Owen). As if this wasn't enough of a headache, Elizabeth's right-hand man Sir Francis Walsingham (Geoffrey Rush) uncovers an assassination plot against the Queen, planned by none other than her own cousin Mary Stuart (Samantha Morton). And they say blood is thicker than water!
